Edmontonians and Calgarians deserve equitable support from their provincial government .

Every investment in a local municipality is an investment worth making, and Calgarians deserve support from their provincial government. But, Edmontonians deserve that support too.

Municipalities across Alberta face similar issues and need similar support from the provincial government. However, there are several instances of funding inequities between Alberta’s two major cities.

Deerfoot Trail (Highway 2) within Calgary is designated as a Provincial Highway, and receives provincial funding for maintenance. Highways 2 and 16 within Edmonton have not received the same designation as Provincial Highways, despite meeting the same criteria.

In 2021, the Province announced a $330M funding agreement with the City of Calgary for a new arena. While that is a very exciting investment for Calgarians, the Province did not make a similar investment in Edmonton’s Rogers Place arena development. The Provincial government should maintain equitable funding between Alberta’s two major cities.

Without public pressure, the province will continue to skip out on their share, costing you more.
