Ric McIver Minister of Municipal Affairs

Dear Premier Smith and Minister McIver,

Like most Albertans, I don’t have the choice to not pay my property taxes. Property taxes fund important municipal services, and provincial buildings are benefiting from these services without paying the full cost. For example, many provincial buildings have priority access to public transit, have their roads cleared after snowfall, and of course, people working in provincial buildings can call police and fire rescue services in the case of an emergency.

When the Government of Alberta doesn’t pay its bills, that leaves a hole in municipal budgets. Then, people like me need to cover the difference. That’s not fair. In Edmonton, the provincial government’s lack of payment has left an $80 million hole since 2019!

Municipal budgets are stretched thin, but the Province is on track to post close to a $3 billion surplus. So I’m asking the Government of Alberta to pay its fair share.

It’s only fair that you reinstate paying a grant in place of the full share of the municipal property taxes provincial buildings receive, and pay retroactively to 2019.

Sincerely,

Your Name
